MATT FINUCANE
'Kafka Song'

(Right Click and 'Save Link As...' to save file to disk)

plus bonus track
'What Comes Next'

(Right Click and 'Save Link As...' to save file to disk)

Matt Finucane has released his debut solo EP through Light Crude recordings on the 20th of October 2008.  It is accompanied by the free download single, and much talked about track, 'Kafka Song' released through Sound And Vision downloads. And backed by the equally gratis b-side 'What Comes Next.'

Londoner Matt Finucane writes but his main activity is his music: he's a man with wild visions to share with you.

One man with a guitar, rudimentary electronic effects, reverb, distortion and a deep distrust of the traditional singer songwriter tag. His sound is shot through with melancholia, his love of Lou Reed's Berlin, his attempts to clamber in the head of literary icons, and the darkness of his late night adventures at the bottom of a bottle.

After lurking on the underbelly of the capital's music scene, he felt like stretching himself seeing if he could do something different with the hackneyed idea of one man and a guitar. Matt doesn't care what you think of him, his work is experimental and uncompromisingly personal but that's what makes his music so addictive. On stage he creates an intense yet hypnotic atmosphere.

A watchable baddy, spilling out dark tales. He's no Chris Fucking Martin.

Here's the man himself with some words about the songs:

Kafka Song: Straight biography.  Meant to be the theme in a rock opera about Kafka versus a flesh-eating space-monster, for glove puppet theatre (I'm not making this up) but we couldn't get it together.  Maybe that was for the best.

What Comes Next: I'm a selfish person, but hopefully not a bad one.  I just want to survive.  That's as good a base as any for a catchy tune, don't you think?

No Sex War Please: I couldn't write a simple, direct love song if you held a gun to my head – or better yet, a naked girl.  Still, like everyone I wondered, 'What do men and women think of each other… and why?'  By "men and women", I really mean any combination, not just vanilla – I don't exclude anyone from this dance.

The Path Ends Suddenly: Nearly-true story, based on a nightmarish experience in a European country that'll remain nameless.  We weren't the couple *in* the story though, thank fuck (for reasons which should become all too clear).

Phantom Party: A personal favourite, about the beautiful, scary fascination of London at night.  Simple.

JOY OF SEX
'December, Month Of Plenty'

(Right Click and 'Save Link As...' to save file to disk)

Joy of Sex have release their debut self titled EP through their Robot Architect label today and it is accompanied by the free download of the track 'December, month Of Plenty'.

Joy of Sex are a new three-piece from Cardiff, two boys and a girl, with a drum machine, stand-up drums and three-way vocals. They agree on several things. Short songs, rhythm, repetition, noise.

Combining menacing cut-up rhythms with triple-barrelled vocal interplay that switches from sinister to playful; a unique concoction that's reminiscent of the taut art-punk dynamics of Wire. They hint at the electro post punk of PiL and share a kinship with fellow Cardiffian's The Victorian English Gentlemen's Club.

It's form meeting function. Newness, not novelty. Equality. Clang, scrape and bang. That is the Joy of Sex.

'December, Month Of Plenty' opens with a chorus of plaintive refrains, before rumbling along pavements of twitching bass and drums. Serrated guitars bleed like a stream of consciousness into a chanting chorus reminiscent of Mission of Burma's finer moments. Short and sharp, clocking in at around the two minute mark.

'Opening with what sounds like a surreal Christmas Carol that quickly turns into an Art Brut meets The Pixies indie-growler, this debut EP from Cardiff based Joy of Sex is a speedy, experimental and pleasing little record.
At four tracks in just over nine minutes it's an extremely brief release, but suggests that this three-piece has enough inventiveness and spark up their sleeves to make them worthy of your attention.' Joy Collective

'Their name is such an obvious gag i'm amazed that someone hasn't already thought of it. Musically - it's spiky, minimalist, arty and goes off in unexpected directions and the interplay between the 3 vocalists brings to mind a fusion of Prinzhorn Dance School and Wire.' Subba-Cultcha.com
